Don't Get Comfortable

I'm listening to a new CD that I just received. It is by a Christian artist by the name of Brandon Heath. On first listen, I am absolutely loving Don't Get Comfortable! The music is great and the songs are well-written. I have seen Brandon live and his genuineness and the quality of his voice reminded me of some of my favorite artists from Texas, such as Cary Pierce and Chris Tomlin. I picked up his previous CD, Soldier, when I saw him at my church in San Diego. If you can find it, that CD has some excellent songs on it, especially "The River Wants To Run," which absolutely inspires me.

Brandon is a well-known songwriter and has co-written with many of the best in and around Nashville. I was very excited to learn that a good friend of mine, Dave Franco, wrote a song with Brandon that was included on this CD. Dave plays piano and keyboards in our church band and also plays guitar. I have written a bit with him as well, but his skills are FAR superior to mine. I love the chorus of "I Will Lay You Down" from Brandon's latest:

Come to me weary now
And I will lay you down
Throw all your cares aside
You will never be denied
Come set your burden free
You will be safe with me
Come to me weary now
I will lay you down

Brandon floats easily from ballads to pop and I like how he can sing a love song to his romantic interest on earth and in the next show the same sentiments for God. I love this verse from "Let's Make It Last":

Come some sunny day
We'll call in sick to our jobs
But what will we say
She's coming down with the flu
I think that I'm catching it too
This is what love makes you do
And live out each moment
They go by so fast
Let's make it last

Not only are the lyrics great, but the music is great too. I find myself pulled into the song with some of the grooves on this CD and I think that the production is better on this CD than his last. Being that this is Brandon's first major label recording could have something to do with that.

Brandon's honesty, love for Christ and love for all of God's people comes through in his music and lyrics. His involvement in ministries such as Young Life and Blood:Water Mission, an organization committed to bringing clean blood and clean water to fight the HIV/AIDS pandemic in Africa, shows that Brandon is putting his words to action and showing God's love wherever he goes. That makes him a true soldier in my book. Check out Brandon's website to learn more about him and his new CD (you can even listen to some of the tracks)...and head over to the Blood:Water Mission website to learn how you can help fight poverty and AIDS in Africa.
